Driving tips for a beginners (and anyone looking to up their driving skills:)

As a veteran driving teacher for more than 26+ years in Lakewood I always tell my girls that there are a few things that every driver must master and turn into a habit in order to be a safe driver and here they are.

1. Adjust your seat and mirrors before driving:
Before hitting the road, make sure your seat is positioned comfortably, and adjust all mirrors to have a clear view of the surrounding traffic.

2. Always wear your seatbelt:
Seatbelts are a crucial safety feature. Ensure that both you and your passengers are wearing seatbelts before driving.

3. Check your blind spots:
Regularly check your blind spots by glancing over your shoulder before changing lanes or making turns. This helps you be aware of vehicles that may not be visible in your mirrors.

4. Keep a safe following distance:
Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for reaction time and prevent accidents. The general rule is to keep at least a 3-second gap.

5. Use turn signals properly:
Indicate your intentions to other drivers by using your turn signals in advance. This helps reduce confusion and promotes smooth traffic flow.

6. Obey traffic signs and signals:
Follow all traffic rules, including obeying stop signs, traffic lights, and speed limits. Adhering to these rules is essential for your safety and the safety of others on the road.

7. Avoid distractions:
Keep your focus on the road by avoiding distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, or adjusting the radio while driving. Distractions can lead to accidents.

8. Practice defensive driving:
Anticipate potential hazards by staying aware of your surroundings. Be prepared to react to the actions of other drivers and adjust your driving accordingly.

9. Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists:
Always be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in crosswalks and intersections. Yield the right of way when required and be patient with vulnerable road users.

10. Adapt to road conditions:
Adjust your driving to accommodate different road and weather conditions. Slow down in adverse weather, such as rain or snow, and be cautious on unfamiliar roads.

11. Use your mirrors effectively:
Regularly check your rearview and side mirrors to stay aware of the traffic behind and beside you. This helps you make informed decisions while driving.

12. Practice parking skills:
Spend time practicing parking in various situations, including parallel parking and perpendicular parking. This will enhance your confidence and ability to navigate different parking scenarios.

Remember, practice is key to becoming a skilled and confident driver. Always stay attentive, follow traffic laws, and prioritize safety on the road.
